Workshop understanding the past – working for the future - Stone Town

Students participating from the School of Architecture Bremen and the School of Architecture, Ardhi University

Venue: Emerson Foundation Art Gallery - Emerson on Harumzi / 26th and 27th September 2022

Task: Connect building typologies together with their cultural, societal and economic relevance within the city. This task requires further analysis and experience of the city, it`s people and how they interact.

Up until now the students from Bremen have gathered information regarding Stone Town, not just about the architecture but also about the other important topics, such as religion, economics, education and culture.

Subsequently they have chosen a building typology linked to their topic and have started to analyze its role within the urban fabric.

Now we have the rare opportunity for architectural students from Dar es Salaam and Bremen to work together to discover, understand and discuss more about the city. In what way can architecture play a significant role in creating a sustainable future for Zanzibar?

Prepare and create a visual representation of your thoughts and ideas for the future.  All mediums are allowed (model, drawings, film etc) but they should also be digitalized.  Please also prepare a 5 minute explanation to accompany your work.

Some questions to get going:

How is the city made up? What are the differences to the European city?

Which typologies are where and why?

What role does the building typology play in its immediate and larger context?

Is the building of cultural, social, economic importance? And in what way?

What architectural role does the building play?

What urban design role does the building play?

Does the building create a sense of identity?

Does the building have an architectural value?

How does the building contribute to the heritage of Stone Town?

What ideas do you have for the future? How can we incorporate architecture in

creating a sustainable future for Stone Town?
