DISSEMINATE!

During this semester, students were tasked with creating architectural models of two historic buildings in Stone Town, Zanzibar, the Indian House and the Arab House. The original buildings were measured on-site by the students during their fieldwork in Zanzibar. Using these measurements and the architectural drawings they developed, the students constructed detailed models at a scale of 1:50.

One of the primary challenges was ensuring that the models could be easily transported to Zanzibar for an on-site exhibition. To achieve this, students first created prototype models to test color accuracy, visual quality, and material resistance to the high humidity typical of Zanzibar’s climate. These tests helped determine the most suitable protective coatings.

Additionally, the models were designed to be lightweight and compact, allowing them to fit into standard suitcase dimensions suitable for air travel. Ensuring that the models could be safely packed and transported without damage was an essential part of the project.

This hands-on experience not only tested the students' model-building skills but also required careful consideration of logistics and environmental factors, reflecting real-world challenges in architectural conservation and presentation.
